Alexander Edward Thalmann was a 22-year-old patrolman with the New Bern Police Department who died from gunshot injuries sustained on March 28, 2014 and succumbed on March 31, 2014. He and another officer stopped a man riding a bicycle without lights near Oak Street and Elm Street that night. According to reports, the bicyclist fled on foot, opened fire, striking Thalmann in the face and wounding the other officer in the leg. Both officers were taken to a local hospital; Thalmann later died of his wounds.

The man who fled was identified as Bryan Stallings, age 35, and was reported to have been in possession of drugs. Officers returned fire during the confrontation and killed Stallings at the scene; that shooting was later ruled justified. Thalmann, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who had served with the department seven months, is survived by his mother, a twin sister, another sister and a brother and was buried in Washington, Beaufort County.

A ballfield at Lawson Creek Park was later named Alexander Thalmann Ballfield in his honor. If anyone knew Patrolman Thalmann or has information about that night, please share what is known.
