John Paul Zubia, 24, of New Bern, North Carolina, was shot and killed on February 13, 2014 at a boat ramp off Lee Landing Road in Reelsboro, Pamlico County. He was a multi-sport athlete in high school and is survived by his parents Paul and Sina Zubia, his son Collin Cash, sister Christina Nicole Zubia, and brothers Santiago Rios Jr. and Daniel Santiago Rios.

Pamlico County Sheriff Billy Sawyer Jr. reported the deadly shooting arose from a fight over a woman. According to that account, Zubia and two others were involved in an altercation; one man struck Zubia with a baseball bat and Cleveland Caraway then shot him. The man who used the bat was treated at CarolinaEast Medical Center for injuries from the fight.

Two people were arrested: Cleveland Caraway, 34, of Alliance, charged with an open count of murder, and Kristen Lee, 31, of Grantsboro, charged with accessory after the fact because her car was used during the crime. The community held Zubia’s funeral on February 20, 2014 at Bryant Funeral Home & Crematory in Alliance.

If anyone has information about the events at the Lee Landing Road boat ramp that night, please come forward.
