Derrick Bethea, 30, was fatally shot outside Brothers in the Hood market at the corner of Aberdeen and Main streets in Laurinburg, North Carolina, on June 4, 2011. The shooting happened about 10:45 a.m. as Bethea and another man, William McKoy, were leaving the store. Both men were struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
A person of interest later turned himself in and was taken into custody, but no charges had been filed at the time. Bethea’s father, Tony Smith, described finding his son lying on the ground. Funeral services were held at Unionville Missionary Baptist Church and Bethea was buried at Hillside Memorial Park.
The shootings came amid a cluster of homicides in the area that heightened community concern. Does anyone have information about the events that morning or about the investigation that followed?
