Melissa Shalottie Morris was 23 when she was shot and killed at a home in Rockingham County on February 3, 2010. A 2004 graduate of Reidsville High School and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Reidsville, she left behind family and a community that held funeral services in her memory.

On the day of the killing, 21-year-old Tavaurus Scales admitted in a 911 call to shooting Morris. Two children were reported to have been present at the scene. Scales was identified as Melissa’s boyfriend and the weapon used was a gun; he later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 to 20 years in jail.
