Investigator Mark Reid Tucker, 49, of Cary, North Carolina, was shot and killed on February 12, 2004 while responding to reports of shots fired. A longtime law enforcement officer who had served 24 years, including as a United States Marshal for the Eastern District of North Carolina and later with the Wake County Sheriff’s Office, Tucker encountered a suspect firing a shotgun in a field. The suspect, who was on felony probation and reportedly feared arrest for firearms possession, shot Investigator Tucker. His body was found beside his unmarked patrol car with his service weapon still in its holster.
An 18-year-old male fled but was captured two days later after a community tip; he was charged with first-degree murder. Two other 18-year-old males were arrested and charged with assisting the suspect in evading capture. Tucker’s wife, Patricia H. Tucker, and their sons Chad and Matthew survived him. Did anyone in the community have contact with Investigator Tucker or information about that February 2004 incident?
