Roger Dale Carter was a 31-year-old Kannapolis Police Department officer who was killed on December 31, 1993. He had served four years in law enforcement and was dispatched to a Nance Street residence after a man called saying he intended to turn himself in on outstanding warrants. When Officer Carter arrived, the suspect ambushed him in the driveway with a rifle and shot him eight times. The shooter then walked down the street and committed suicide.
Officer Carter is survived by his wife, two sons, parents, a sister, and two brothers. The caller had earlier told the department he would surrender at the station, but a dispatcher did not send an officer to the station as requested; instead, Officer Carter was sent to the home. That discrepancy has been noted as a question about how the call was handled in the events leading to this fatal ambush.
If anyone knew Officer Carter, the suspect, or was in the Nance Street area that night, please share what might shed light on the sequence of events.
