On November 11, 1993, in Laurinburg, North Carolina, 28-year-old Robin G. McLaughlin, a Black male, was killed by gun violence. The shooting also killed 25-year-old James Antonio White and 21-year-old Ronald Eugene Everett.

Investigators later arrested a man from Scotland County in New York City while he was driving a vehicle that belonged to one of the victims, a development that provided a significant lead.
