Deputy Paul Herman Futrell, 36, was killed on September 18, 1992, while on duty with the Hertford County Sheriff’s Office in Winton, North Carolina. A United States Marine Corps veteran, Futrell had served with the sheriff’s department for two years when he answered a domestic disturbance call about a father refusing to return his daughter’s child. As Futrell attempted to resolve the situation, the father shot him in the head, and Futrell died at the scene.

The shooter, identified as 47-year-old Nehemiah Pope Jr., was arrested shortly after the incident by then-deputy sheriff Sgt. Rodney Pennington and Winton Police Chief Chris Williams and was indicted on first-degree murder charges. Futrell is survived by his wife and two children; his death was the first time a Hertford County deputy was killed in the line of duty.
