Patrol Officer Eugene A. Griffin, 42, of the Charlotte Police Department was killed on November 22, 1991, while working an overtime security assignment at the Red Roof Inn.

The shooter, Allen Lorenzo Gaines, and another youth, Bryan Cornelius Harris, were convicted of first-degree murder on October 6, 1993, and sentenced to life in prison. The third youth, Al Mustafa Coleman, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and given a 10-year sentence; Coleman was released on parole on September 19, 1996. Gaines was denied parole in 2020 and again in 2022.

Officer Griffin had served 21 years with the department and is survived by his wife Hilda, also a CMPD officer, and their son and daughter. Does anyone have memories of Officer Griffin or information about the incident that could add context to what happened that night?
