Trooper Raymond Earl Worley, 44, of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, was shot and killed on May 14, 1985, in Weldon, North Carolina. Worley had served 23 years with the Highway Patrol. He stopped a van and placed its driver in his patrol car; shortly afterward a second van arrived and its driver, identified as the detained man’s brother, approached and shot Worley with a handgun. The vans were reported to contain stolen property from a grocery store burglary in Pender County.
The suspects fled, prompting a massive manhunt involving state, local, and federal officers from North Carolina and Virginia. Four suspects were arrested; three were convicted of accessory to murder and possession of stolen property, and the shooter was convicted of first-degree murder. Worley left a wife and two young daughters.
Does anyone have memories of Trooper Worley, the response in Weldon that day, or information that could add to the record?
