Fredrick R. Johnson III, 25, was shot and killed on the evening of July 26, 2022, on Ohio Avenue near the intersection of Lambros Lane in Ashtabula, Ohio. Officers found him lying in the road with an apparent gunshot wound to the head; he was taken to Ashtabula County Medical Center and later died of his injuries. Johnson was born December 4, 1996, in Columbus and competed in football, track and wrestling at Lakeside School District.

Witnesses said multiple people were firing at each other in the street before fleeing in vehicles. Two suspects, Malikhi Jermaine Coleman and Julius Devon Simmons, were arrested shortly after the shooting; Coleman was charged with murder, discharging a firearm at or near prohibited premises, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, while Simmons was charged with tampering with evidence, discharging a firearm at or near prohibited premises, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. A third suspect was taken into custody the following day and the investigation remains ongoing.
