Deputy Sheriff Matthew Eugene Yates, 41, of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office died on July 24, 2022 after being shot while responding to a shots fired call at the 1100 block of Ashwood Drive in South Charleston. He and another deputy went to check a mobile home after a 911 caller reported a female had broken in and fired multiple shots; deputies were met with gunfire and Yates was shot inside the trailer and trapped during a prolonged standoff.
Officials say the suspect, identified as Cole White, 27, shot his mother, Jodie Arbuckle, 47, and then shot Deputy Yates. The standoff culminated when the mobile home caught fire; Cole White and Jodie Arbuckle died in the blaze. Another deputy was injured during the rescue attempt and has since recovered. Yates, who had served 15 years with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital and later died of his wounds. He is survived by his wife, daughter, two stepsons, and his father, a retired deputy.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the probe and continues to gather evidence. If anyone has information about the shooting or the events that led to the standoff, please come forward.
