Mwaka Azali, a 37-year-old African American woman, died on May 26, 2021, in Euclid, Ohio, after a violent altercation with her husband, Omnisun Azali, then 36. Court documents and testimony describe a struggle over a firearm in the couple’s home during which Mwaka reportedly fired three shots and Omnisun then shot her three times in the head with a .40-caliber pistol. After the shooting, Omnisun drove their two children to his mother’s house and later returned with his mother, who placed the initial 911 call.

Omnisun Azali was arrested and charged with murder, felonious assault, and domestic violence. His trial began in late November 2022; he did not dispute firing the fatal shots and argued he acted in self-defense. The case attracted attention because Omnisun’s mother is Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court Judge Cassandra Collier-Williams, who was at the scene.

Does anyone have additional details about the couple or the events that night that could help clarify what happened?
