William Ray Riley, 28, of Middletown, Ohio, was shot and killed on May 15, 2020 after intervening in a dispute involving a group of homeless people in the 400 block of Curtis Street. He was taken to a nearby hospital and later died of his injuries.

Police arrested 40-year-old Jason Halcomb the next day at a Church Street residence; investigators say the murder weapon was recovered and Halcomb admitted to the shooting. He was charged with murder and held on $1 million bond, but a Butler County grand jury later declined to indict and the murder charge was dropped, a development that has upset Riley’s family and the community.

Riley is remembered by relatives as strong-willed and resilient; he is survived by sisters Victoria, Joseph, and Darlene, grandmothers, nieces, nephews and other loved ones. Does anyone have information about the events on Curtis Street that night or about William’s life and connections in Middletown?
