On November 22, 2019, 20-year-old Nicholas Hudson of Batavia, Ohio, was shot and killed at the On The Green at Royal Oaks Apartment complex in Pierce Township. The shooting occurred about 11:20 p.m. at 304 St. Andrews Drive after Hudson and a friend, 24-year-old Jeffrey Hutchins, visited an apartment where 25-year-old Craig Walker had been selling marijuana. Walker told police he overheard talk of a planned robbery, retrieved a handgun and let the visitors in; an altercation followed and both visitors were shot. One victim was found dead in front of the building and the other later died at the University of Cincinnati Hospital. Walker was arrested nearby and charged with two counts of aggravated murder; he was held on $1 million bond.

The complex had seen another fatality earlier in the year, and local officials said they were working with the property owners to address safety concerns.
