Brittany D. McDowell, 28, of Columbus, Ohio, was found dead on July 4, 2019, in Alum Creek State Park near Lewis Center. An Ohio Department of Natural Resources officer discovered her body in a shallow grave. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office treated the case as a homicide after noting injuries; the Delaware County Coroner’s Office was assigned to determine the exact cause of death.
Court documents state that 24-year-old John Bartholomew picked up McDowell for paid sex acts and, according to his statements to police, shot her in the head with a .22-caliber revolver after she allegedly threatened him with a taser, then used a 9mm Beretta to shoot her again. He admitted to digging a shallow grave and placing her body in the park. Bartholomew was arrested and charged with murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse; his bond was set at $1.5 million. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Columbus Division of Police assisted the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office.
Family members described themselves as devastated and said Brittany was not a fighter. The case attracted media attention and community support for the family. Does anyone have information about Brittany’s movements before July 4, 2019, or contacts who may help fill gaps in the timeline?
