Sylvia McGhee was 14 when she was shot and killed on March 30, 2019, near 11th Street SW and Bieyl Court SW in Canton, Ohio. She was found with a gunshot wound to the back of her head and pronounced dead at the scene. Family and friends described Sylvia as a ray of sunshine who wanted to be a hairstylist and was looking forward to getting her work permit.
Investigators arrested two teenage boys in connection with the killing. A 13-year-old was charged with aggravated murder and obstruction for lying to police; he initially entered a not true plea and was held in custody. A 14-year-old was identified as a suspect but was not charged or taken into custody. In January 2020 the 13-year-old, identified as Isaiah Lynch, pleaded true to the charges, admitting to the shooting and saying he believed Sylvia was pregnant, which an autopsy found was not true. The 13-year-old was sentenced to youth prison until he turns 21, with the possibility of additional adult time.
A candlelight vigil at the Southeast Community Center drew community support. Does anyone have information about Sylvia, her routine that day, or the area around 11th Street SW and Bieyl Court SW?
