Ali Al Azirjawi, a 28-year-old man of Iraqi ethnicity, was shot and killed on January 25, 2018, in Delaware, Ohio, during a child custody exchange outside the home of Bryan S. Pemberton. Al Azirjawi had driven his fiancée to Pemberton’s residence to pick up her daughter when the shooting occurred.

Bryan Pemberton, 33 and from Delaware, was taken into custody shortly after the shooting and was charged with aggravated murder with bond set at $5 million. Pemberton pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity; in November 2019 the court found him not guilty by reason of insanity, determining he suffered from a serious mental disease or defect that prevented him from knowing the wrongfulness of his actions.

Al Azirjawi had moved from Iraq and served in the United States military. His family and fiancée described him as caring and selfless. This killing was the City of Delaware’s first murder since 2011.
