Mitchell Pruitt, 50, of Warren, Ohio, was shot and killed in his home on August 5, 2014. The Trumbull County coroner ruled the death a homicide from multiple gunshot wounds. Police were summoned early that morning by Pruitt’s girlfriend, who heard gunshots and found him unresponsive in the kitchen; officers reported no other people in the residence after an extensive search.

David Blackmon, 47, who lived on the same street, was arrested and charged in the killing. Tips from the community and cooperation with the U.S. Marshals Task Force contributed to his arrest; investigators found a small amount of crack cocaine and a glass crack pipe on him and noted prior criminal charges including drug trafficking and receiving stolen property. Blackmon later pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter with a weapons specification and was sentenced to nine years in prison in February 2015. Pruitt’s family spoke publicly about their grief and frustration, and his daughter said she would try to live in a way that would make him proud.
