Janelle Mauricio was 20 and from Fostoria, Ohio. She died after being shot during a burglary at her home on May 23, 2014; she later died at the hospital. Janelle enjoyed cooking, baking, drawing, poetry and photography, worked at Applebee’s in Findlay, had previously worked at Cedar Point during Hallow Weekends, and was a graduate of Fostoria High School and Vanguard in Fremont. She was a member of St. Wendelin Catholic Church.
Three teenagers—Tyson Ogg, Garrett Brown and Dallas Salaz—broke into the home that night. Janelle’s boyfriend, Caleb Barto, was present and injured but survived. The suspects were arrested within 24 hours; Ogg and Brown were charged with murder, aggravated burglary and felonious assault, while Salaz was charged with complicity to commit aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and felonious assault. Reports say the intruders knew Janelle and her boyfriend and the break-in was believed to be retaliatory. One short but crucial fact remains unclear: the precise sequence of events inside the house that led to the shooting.
