Melissa V. Nilson, 26, was shot and killed outside her Huber Heights home on February 21, 2014. She left behind a young son, Brendan, and a grieving family who held a celebration of life to remember her.

Police identified her boyfriend, Ryan D. Mitchell, 28 at the time, as the primary suspect in the shooting. Reports say Mitchell fled the scene after the attack; surveillance footage and witness testimony were cited as part of the case. Melissa’s mother, Linda Nilson, described the pain of losing her daughter as shredding.
