Kayla Elizabeth Allen was 10 years old when she was critically wounded on April 12, 2012, at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Brooklyn, a Cleveland suburb. The family was celebrating her sister Kerri’s 10th birthday when Kayla’s father, Kevin Allen, opened fire. He killed his wife Katherina Allen and their daughter Kerri, then wounded Kayla.

Police engaged Kevin Allen in a shootout as he exited the restaurant; he refused to surrender and was fatally shot by officers. Kayla was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center and remained in critical condition for about a month before her condition worsened and she was transferred to hospice care. The shooting was reported to have been triggered by a domestic dispute after Katherina told her husband she was leaving.
