Deputy Sheriff Robert Michael Tanner Jr., 39, was shot and killed on January 8, 2002, in Zanesville, Ohio, while on patrol. He had been flagged down on Dunzweiler Drive near Kearns Drive and radioed dispatch with a license plate number; he did not respond when dispatch answered back. A passerby later found him next to his vehicle with a gunshot wound; his service weapon remained in its holster.

Three suspects fled the scene but were apprehended that same evening in a wooded area during a large search. The 28-year-old shooter later pled guilty to all charges and received life without parole. Tanner had served eight years with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department and is survived by his wife.

Anyone who knew Deputy Tanner or has information about the case is asked to come forward.
