Eduardo Childress, 22, was fatally shot on January 11, 2013, on the 2300 block of East 17th Street in Oakland, California, near Garfield Municipal Playground. The shooting occurred at about 2:45 p.m.; Childress was found with multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to a hospital where he died shortly after.
The killing came during a 24-hour period that saw several homicides in Oakland, underscoring the city’s high level of gun violence at the time. Authorities redeployed additional officers and sought federal assistance, but investigators faced limited community cooperation and resource constraints that made solving homicides difficult. Local officials and residents called for more comprehensive measures and community-led efforts to address the underlying causes of the violence and to seek justice for victims such as Childress.
