Seventeen-year-old Ken Harbin was fatally shot on January 11, 2013, in Oakland, California. The shooting occurred at about 8:15 p.m. in the 9400 block of Hillside Street. Harbin, a high school senior, was one of four people killed in separate shootings across a six-hour span that day.

Oakland police said the cluster of killings was tied to conflicts between local gangs; Chief Howard Jordan linked two of the four homicides, including Harbin’s, to feuding groups responsible for a significant share of recent violent crime. Authorities recovered 11 weapons in connection with the weekend incidents, and one arrest had been made while a search warrant was issued for another suspect.

Harbin’s death prompted vigils and rallies led by family members, including his grandmother Brenda Harbin, and community groups such as Soldiers Against Violence Everywhere calling for an end to the violence and stronger action from city leaders. No further arrests have been reported in Harbin’s shooting, which remains part of a broader pattern of gun violence in Oakland.

If anyone knew Ken, saw activity on Hillside Street that evening, or has information about the shooting, please come forward to help the investigation.
