In the early hours of New Year’s Day 2020 in Glen Campbell, Pennsylvania, 43-year-old Jerald Jerry Bartlebaugh was shot and killed while he slept in his bed next to his girlfriend. The shooting occurred around 3 a.m. at a home at the corner of Graham and Morris Streets. Neighbors reported hearing gunfire and police were summoned.
The suspect was the victim’s son, Matthew Bartlebaugh, then 28, who allegedly entered the house and opened fire. After the shooting a prolonged standoff unfolded; state police and a SWAT team established a perimeter and eventually used flashbangs to disorient the barricaded suspect, who surrendered at about 10 a.m. Matthew Bartlebaugh was arrested and charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless endangerment. Reports noted he had a history of mental illness.
What details about the early morning timeline or the household circumstances could help explain how this tragedy began?
