William T. Billy Callan Jr., 19, of Altoona, died from a gunshot to the head on September 29, 2016, at his apartment on the 1600 block of Second Avenue. He was with friends and playing video games when Michael Tony Corle, 20, allegedly took a revolver from a backpack and began handling it. Police say Corle opened and closed the cylinder, pulled the trigger, then pointed the gun at Callan’s head while laughing; Callan laughed, and the weapon discharged, fatally wounding him.

Authorities described the shooting as unintentional and negligent. Corle was later charged with aggravated assault and tampering with evidence after burying the gun near Pleasant Valley Elementary School; he pleaded guilty and received a state prison sentence. Callan’s family and friends remembered him as well liked in the community.
