A gathering to watch a boxing match in Altoona, Pennsylvania, turned deadly for 28-year-old Kai Lamar Carter on May 3, 2015. A long-standing dispute between Carter and 35-year-old Jorge Luis Gomez III began inside a residence, moved outdoors and became physical. Gomez produced a firearm and shot Carter; one bullet severed Carter’s femoral artery. Carter managed to flee but collapsed about a block from the house and died from massive blood loss. Authorities found him a short time later after shots were reported.
Gomez turned himself in to the Altoona Police Department and was charged with criminal homicide. Police searched the party residence and recovered three pounds of marijuana. At trial, Gomez’s defense said Carter was the aggressor and that Gomez fired because he felt threatened. In September 2016 a Blair County jury acquitted Gomez of first- and third-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter but convicted him of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and carrying a firearm without a license.
Did anyone at that party or living in the neighborhood at the time notice the argument before it turned deadly?
