On the early evening of October 12, 2011, Officer Derek Kotecki, 40, an 18-year veteran of the Lower Burrell Police Department and a K-9 handler, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Dairy Queen in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania. Officers had converged on the location after a tip that a wanted fugitive would be there. The fugitive, 33-year-old Charles Chunk Post, was wanted on charges of attempted homicide and aggravated assault arising from an incident about ten days earlier in which he allegedly shot at his boss.
As Officer Kotecki and his K-9 partner Odin approached a Jeep where Post was hiding, Post opened fire through a window. Kotecki was struck in the head, left arm, and abdomen and died of his injuries. Post attempted to flee but was cornered behind the restaurant; an exchange of gunfire followed and Post was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Toxicology on Post reportedly showed cocaine, morphine, and Xanax.
Authorities later charged seven people with helping Post evade capture, including his brother Chad Post and two women, Amanda Walters and Nicole Walters, who were accused of supplying food, money, and a phone while he hid. Amanda Walters and Nicole Walters received two years of probation for their roles. Does anyone have information about Officer Kotecki, his K-9 partner Odin, or the events that night that could help clarify what happened?
