Scott Thomas Garlick was 19 and a senior at Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School when he was killed on April 6, 2009. He worked at the Subway on 58th Street in Altoona, where he studied electronics, played soccer and loved music. On that day an armed man, 28-year-old Army veteran Nicholas A. Horner, entered the restaurant intending to rob it, opened fire at the back door and fatally shot Garlick. Another employee, Michele Petty, was seriously wounded. Cynthia Harker attempted to stop Garlick’s bleeding while Altoona police later pursued Horner, who fled and then killed 64-year-old Raymond Williams in a parking lot at the Ellenberger apartment complex.
Prosecutors argued Horner was committing a robbery and fixated on the gun his father had given him; the defense said Horner suffered a combat-related flashback from PTSD and was not aware of his actions. Horner was convicted and received life without parole. Garlick’s death prompted a memorial scholarship in his name for students studying electronics technology.
If anyone knew Scott, worked with him at the Subway, or has information about that day, please share what is known.
