On a July morning in 1970 in Price, Utah, 23-year-old Loretta Jones was found dead on her living room floor by her four-year-old daughter, Heidi. Loretta, a single mother taking accounting classes while working to support her child, had been sexually assaulted and stabbed 17 times. Reports say she apparently tried to write her killer’s name in her own blood before dying. A 10-year-old neighbor that night reported an attempted abduction by a man matching the description of someone Loretta had briefly dated, Thomas Edward Egley.
Egley was arrested about a month after the murder, but the case against him was dismissed for lack of evidence and the investigation went cold. Years later Heidi pressed for renewed attention to the case; a sheriff’s sergeant who knew her revisited old files and witnesses. A former Colorado neighbor later said Egley confessed to killing Loretta after she rejected his advances. In August 2016 Egley was arrested in Colorado, pleaded guilty to murder in October 2016, and was sentenced in November 2016 to 10 years to life.
Anyone who knew Loretta or Heidi, or who remembers the Price neighborhood in 1970, is invited to share information that could illuminate what happened that day.
