Cameron Lee Pirtle, age 20, was shot and later died at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital after being brought in with gunshot wounds on the afternoon of August 31, 2022. Police located the shooting scene at Courtney Cove in east Jackson and say evidence there pointed to a Rivers Street residence; investigators report a robbery occurred before Pirtle was shot.

The Jackson Police Department arrested two suspects within days. On September 2, 2022, 18-year-old Tommy Taylor and an unnamed male juvenile were taken into custody and charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of especially aggravated robbery, first-degree murder, and felony murder. The arrests were described as bringing a swift, though not complete, sense of closure to the community.
