John Patrick Cole, a lifelong resident of Clarksville, Tennessee born August 23, 1974, was fatally shot inside a vehicle on the afternoon of Sunday, May 1, 2022. Clarksville Police responded to a report of a shooting in progress at about 1:06 p.m. on the 700 block of Power Street and found Cole, a white male, with fatal gunshot wounds; he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives from the Clarksville Police Department’s Special Operations Homicide Unit and the Crime Scene Team led the investigation. Investigators stated the shooting was not random and that those involved were known to each other, suggesting a personal motive rather than a wider threat to the community. An arrest warrant for criminal homicide was served on 26-year-old Tristen James Deschapell on May 9, 2022; Deschapell was in custody in Carrollton, Georgia, on unrelated charges at that time. On June 1, 2022, 47-year-old Natalie Rene Smull was arrested at her Clarksville residence on charges of tampering with evidence and accessory after the fact to criminal homicide.
