Jeremy Edward Cross, a 43-year-old Caucasian man, was fatally shot in the chest in the Sinking Creek community of Elizabethton, Tennessee, on February 19, 2022. Deputies responded after multiple calls reporting gunfire around 1:00 a.m. on Hillside Drive; Cross was found with a serious gunshot wound, received CPR, and was taken to the hospital where he died shortly after arrival.

Investigators determined there had been an exchange of gunfire and that Cross had been driving a stolen vehicle and was wanted on multiple arrest warrants at the time. Two persons of interest were named: 25-year-old Austin Michael Brady and 40-year-old Kenneth Matthew Dayton. Both men were sought and later taken into custody; Dayton’s arrest followed a standoff and was reported as stemming from charges unrelated to Cross’s death. The Sheriff’s Office has not publicly identified who fired the fatal shot, and the investigation remains open.
