Mary Denise Necie Ables, 54, of Athens, Tennessee, was shot and killed on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at a residence in the Mt. Verd community of McMinn County. The same incident left another person, Jonathan Burger, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

In the days after the shooting, two arrests were announced in connection with the case: Esau C. Kelly was charged with murder and attempted second-degree murder, and Melissa K. Pueirtt was charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. The investigation into the double-shooting that claimed Ables’ life is ongoing.
