Amber N. Schwenk, 40, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound in her Kingsport, Tennessee, home on Bays View Court in the early morning hours of May 15, 2021. Investigators focused on 36-year-old Zachery Felton, an acquaintance and former partner who allegedly went to Schwenk’s house claiming he was there to retrieve belongings. Witnesses said a gunshot was heard about twenty minutes after he was let inside; Felton fled before police arrived.

An affidavit alleged a possible motive: Felton had recently been released from jail and accused his ex-girlfriend of stealing more than $30,000 while he was incarcerated. Felton had been on pre-trial release with a court-ordered ankle monitor that was removed shortly before the shooting; detectives later found the disabled monitor in the median of Interstate 26. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation added him to its Most Wanted list and the search crossed state lines.
