In the early morning hours of February 6, 2021, Javier Dante Wiley, a 30-year-old Black man and U.S. Army ammunition specialist, was shot and killed in McMinnville, Tennessee. Wiley had been out with friends and returned to the Fair Street residence of James and Megan Garrett after visiting bars in Murfreesboro. An argument between Wiley and James Garrett began on the drive back and briefly became physical when they pulled over. The dispute restarted after they arrived at the Garretts’ home; James Garrett demanded Wiley leave, then retrieved an AR-15 from the house and fired when Wiley reportedly charged at him. Wiley was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Wiley was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on March 17, 1990, and served with the U.S. Army’s Special Operations Command, including deployments to Iraq and Syria. His family held a funeral with full military honors. The shooting and its aftermath left his young daughter, mother, and community grieving.
Did anyone who knew Javier or was in the area that night see what happened or have information that could help clarify the events?
