Newell Lee, 47, was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the 2300 block of Linden Avenue in East Knoxville on the evening of November 7, 2020. Knoxville police responded about 6:30 p.m.; the Violent Crimes Unit opened an investigation into the shooting.

Within a week investigators identified 20-year-old Milan Claypool of Detroit as a suspect. A warrant was issued, and Claypool was taken into custody in Detroit and charged with Lee’s murder; he was held at the Wayne County Detention Facility pending extradition to Tennessee. The Knoxville Police Department announced the charge and arrest but did not release information about a motive or any relationship between Lee and Claypool.

Court documents and later filings mention that Milan D. Claypool also became a defendant in a federal case in the Eastern District of Tennessee, but records available at this time do not clearly link those federal charges to the murder or show the case outcome. Does anyone have information about Lee’s life in East Knoxville or details that could shed light on what led to this shooting?
