On the evening of October 14, 2020, 24-year-old Kyree Marcus Holmes, a Black man from Memphis, was shot in the chest in the West Carters Valley community on Haynes Drive in Kingsport, Tennessee. He was taken to a local hospital and died of his injuries. The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about the shooting at about 9:30 p.m. and opened an investigation.

Witnesses identified a primary suspect as Roger Rabbit Cornelius Roberts, a 25-year-old white man from Church Hill. The sheriff’s office obtained a warrant charging Roberts with second-degree murder and warned the public not to approach him. Roberts was later located in Castlewood, Virginia, and arrested there without incident by deputies from the Russell County Sheriff’s Office; he was being held by the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail Authority pending extradition back to Sullivan County.
