On the evening of September 27, 2020, 63-year-old Billy Ray Jones was found dead inside his Crossville, Tennessee, home on Christian Road after deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting at about 6:22 p.m. The death was attributed to an apparent gunshot wound.

Investigators from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office identified Thomas Mack Arnold Sr. as the primary suspect and learned he was attempting to flee toward Florida in a green 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis. Georgia deputies stopped that vehicle on Interstate 75 at about 3:10 a.m. the next morning and took Arnold into custody without incident; he was charged with first-degree murder and extradited to Tennessee.

At trial the jury found Thomas Mack Arnold Sr. guilty of first-degree murder and he received a life sentence for the killing of Billy Ray Jones.
