Matthew Dylan Musser, 20, was shot to death in his Crossville, Tennessee, home at 434 Doris Drive on September 26, 2020. Deputies found Musser lying in a bed with multiple gunshot wounds; an autopsy confirmed his death was caused by those wounds and four bullets were recovered from his body.
According to the case, 20-year-old Robert David Morse called emergency services and was sitting in the front yard when deputies arrived. He surrendered, indicated where the firearm was inside the house, and was taken into custody. Witness testimony presented at trial described Morse arguing shortly before multiple gunshots were heard, a witness finding Musser gravely wounded and Morse holding a gun, and that the witness disarmed Morse. Court records state Morse shot Musser three times while he was asleep, then shot him several more times believing the wounds were not survivable.
A grand jury indicted Morse on first-degree murder. A Cumberland County jury later convicted him of premeditated first-degree murder and the court imposed a life sentence; an appeal challenging premeditation and evidence rulings was reviewed and the trial judgment was affirmed.
