Winston Callender, 29, of Oakland was shot on October 20, 2012, near MacArthur Boulevard and High Street. He survived the initial attack and underwent multiple surgeries for internal injuries but continued to suffer complications. He died at his mother’s home on October 25, 2012, surrounded by family.
Family members describe a troubled upbringing: untreated mental health and learning issues that were dismissed by teachers and doctors, and the absence of a father figure that led him to seek mentorship among friends involved in street activity. Those associations are said to have placed him in dangerous situations that culminated in the shooting. Winston is remembered by his mother Judith Jones, sister Chanelle, and wife Blanca as a caring father and devoted family member.
