On the night of June 5, 2020, a verbal dispute inside an Exxon Tiger Mart on Gallatin Pike near Emmitt Avenue in Madison, Tennessee, escalated into a fatal shooting. Thirty-four-year-old Justin Sturgis argued with 24-year-old Azon Smith after Sturgis said Smith was looking at him the wrong way. The confrontation continued in the parking lot; Sturgis allegedly made verbal threats, reportedly displayed a firearm as he left, returned in his vehicle, and was shot multiple times by Smith as he attempted to drive away.

Sturgis was taken to Skyline Medical Center and died of his injuries. Smith initially told investigators he fired in self-defense because he believed Sturgis was reaching for a weapon, but surveillance video from the gas station contradicted that account. Authorities arrested and charged Azon Smith with criminal homicide based on the investigation and the video evidence.

Did anyone witness the confrontation at the Exxon or have additional details about what happened in the parking lot?
