Desergio Taylor, 32, was fatally shot inside his Bennett Drive home on the evening of January 15, 2020. A Clarksville native and father of four, Taylor was described as a family man, one of six siblings, who loved football, played semi-pro for the Tri-City Outlaws, and hoped to open his own restaurant. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and died of his injuries.

Investigators say two men, Marc Crowder and Decory Smith, were allowed into the apartment and that witnesses heard one of them say You know what this is immediately before multiple gunshots. Taylor’s brother, who was present, returned fire and both suspects were wounded. Phone records and text messages are reported to have shown Smith called Taylor minutes before the shooting and expressed intent to hit a lick, leading police to conclude the attack was a planned robbery. After fleeing, the men forced Crowder’s girlfriend, Ricki Adkins, to drive them to a hospital; Adkins was later charged with accessory after the fact and tampering with evidence, charges that were dropped in exchange for her testimony.

Marc Crowder and Decory Smith were arrested and charged with criminal homicide. What additional details about the night on Bennett Drive might help clarify how events escalated so quickly?
