Kaleb Bruce Wakefield, 26, was shot and killed in his driveway in Cordova, Tennessee, on January 4, 2020. A graduate of Ooltewah High School, Chattanooga State College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, he worked as an Industrial Engineering Specialist at UPS in Knoxville. Friends and family remembered him as happy-go-lucky, loving and caring with a wonderful smile and a readiness to help others.
The shooting followed a loud altercation at a neighboring residence. Two brothers who lived next door, Chauncy and Timothy Black, were identified as suspects and arrested on charges that included second-degree murder, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and tampering with evidence. Timothy Black died of an illness in December 2020 before he could stand trial. Chauncy Black was later convicted of reckless endangerment for Wakefield and for reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon related to another person at the scene; he was initially held on a $100,000 bond.
The Black brothers’ residence generated hundreds of prior calls for service and was eventually closed as a public nuisance.
