Matthew Nelson, 35, was shot dead in the pre-dawn hours of May 19, 2019, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Police were called for reports of gunfire just before 5:40 a.m. on Sanders Road and found Nelson in the roadway on Earl Slate Road with at least one gunshot wound. Investigators say the shooting occurred after a confrontation: Nelson approached a vehicle, a passenger identified as 25-year-old Joseph Nicholas Morris was in the car, and the driver warned Nelson to stay away from his wife’s home. As the vehicle drove off, Morris allegedly exited the car, said he was going to end things for good, then shot Nelson.

A witness heard multiple shots and saw a man run from the scene, dropping a coat in the road. Morris and his mother, Susan Shayne Ficklin, were later found on Interstate 65 in Kentucky and extradited to Clarksville. In January 2020 a Montgomery County grand jury indicted Morris on one count of premeditated first-degree murder and Ficklin, then 48, on a charge of accessory after the fact; both were scheduled for arraignment the following month.

Does anyone have further information about Nelson’s movements that morning or saw activity on Sanders Road around 5:30–6:00 a.m.?
