In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in August 2018, Jimmy Shelton, 44, was shot multiple times at a residence on Beaver Drive in Maryville, Tennessee, and pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities described the shooting as a domestic situation rather than a random act of violence.
Deputies responded to a 6 a.m. call from a man named Sean who reported a shooting. They found 24-year-old Sean Foley and a 25-year-old woman outside; Foley told dispatchers he had placed a gun in the mailbox. Shelton’s body was located on the back porch. Foley was taken into custody and charged with criminal homicide and held on a $1 million bond.
Foley, an Army veteran, told investigators he confronted an unarmed Shelton with a gun after overhearing a conversation that led him to believe Shelton was sexually abusing Foley’s girlfriend, Miranda Goddard; Goddard’s statements on police dash-cam footage were reported to be consistent with Foley’s account. What additional information might explain what led to the shooting or who else witnessed events at the house?
