Nageab Alshaif was working the overnight shift behind the counter at the Goldline convenience store near the U.S. 45 Bypass and Old Hickory Boulevard in Jackson, Tennessee, when a would-be robber entered in the early hours of April 30, 2018. Surveillance later described in court records showed a masked, gloved gunman rush the counter; Alshaif initially waved brown paper merchandise bags as if to shoo the intruder, then a single shot struck his abdomen. He was alive when officers arrived and was taken to a Memphis hospital, where he died later that day.
Investigators initially had only grainy security footage and a general description of someone dressed in black running south from the store. In 2019 Tony Latrell Greer—already jailed on other charges—confessed to being the gunman and named Michael Marcell Brown as the person who helped plan the robbery and stayed outside as a lookout.
Brown was tried by a Madison County jury, which convicted him on October 14, 2021 of first degree felony murder in the perpetration of or attempt to perpetrate robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery; he was sentenced to life for the murder conviction with additional time for the other counts, and the convictions were upheld on appeal. Did anyone in Jackson remember seeing a suspicious all-black figure near the Goldline around April 30, 2018?
