Brett D. Rodgers, 20, was shot and killed inside the Hog Wild Saloon in Kingsport, Tennessee, in the early morning hours of March 2, 2018. Rodgers, a former standout at Dobyns-Bennett High School and an East Tennessee State University student with hopes of playing professional football, was found unresponsive on the floor around 2:00 AM and later died at a local hospital. A 16-year-old male from Bristol, Virginia, was identified by detectives as the suspected shooter, taken into custody the same day and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault; another 16-year-old Black male from Bristol was seriously wounded but survived. Later reports named the alleged shooter as William Newkirk Jr., who was 17 by October 2018. Rodgers’s family filed a $25 million wrongful death lawsuit against the bar’s owner and manager, alleging inadequate security; the Hog Wild Saloon subsequently closed permanently.
Did anyone who was at the bar that night or who knew Brett see anything that could help clarify what happened?
