He did not live at the address where his body was discovered. Investigators determined he had sustained what appeared to be a fatal gunshot wound and an autopsy was performed to confirm the cause of death.

A canvas the night of the reported shots turned up no evidence or witnesses, and the Knoxville Police Department has described the inquiry as hampered by a lack of physical evidence and eyewitness accounts.
